Merapi Volcanic Mountain: I Saw Fire in Me

Once I heard volcano talked to me...

Once I felt volcano stared at me...

Once upon a time....

There was a little girl who dreamed high ..

I got a chance to be in Yogyakarta once and one thing came up on my mind when I just arrived “how to get the volcano?” so I set up plans for trekking the Merapi mountain. Luckily I got contact with a Vietnamese girl who had a plan to climb the mountain as well. What a coincidence. So we climbed the mountain together after setting up everything.

Merapi volcanic mountain is located in the border between Central Java and Yogyakarta provinces which well-known as the most active volcano in Indonesia. Merapi means “the one making fire” in Javanese’s old language. Smoke in the summit can be often seen from the peak of the volcano. This mountain of fire rises to 9,551 feet (2,911 meters). Since the volcano is about 32 kilometers from the North of Yogyakarta so we started our trip around 9 AM in the morning and we reached the main entrance of the mountain after driving for 2 hours from the city center.

We rode North out of Jogja on Jl. Magelang for 45 min. Then continued to Jalan Boyolali and headed towards Ketep. After Ketep, we continued to Selo where we could park our scooter and walked starting the trek. For me personally, the track wasn’t that hard for the beginner so even though you never climbed in your whole life, giving a shot to climb Merapi is not a bad decision.

We met some climbers on the way up. We didn’t plan to camp on the summit since we just wanted to conquer the summit and went down afterward. In the main entrance, you need to pay. The prices for locals and foreigners are different. For locals are only 17K and for foreigners are 50K. It wasn’t so expensive but still, what the point of making a different price?

Since I climbed with a Vietnamese girl, meaning she paid differently. We did trick to avoid the different prices by pretending to be a local. Well yeah, we cheated. The guards thought my travel mate was Indonesian and luckily they were not being too suspicious to ask some questions so we were safe. Plus I told her to shut her mouth by not saying any word. It worked. What a genius!

The weather was friendly enough so we took some pictures as a souvenir. We spent 4 hours of trekking, we managed to reach the top. It was kinda fast as we are girls. A bit tough but so challenging. Once we reached the top, it was too cloudy for taking a clear picture but it doesn’t matter. We made it. That’s the most important thing.  I tried to keep going to the top but unfortunately, we couldn’t make it because of the smoke. At least I tried. Well done.

So, fire in the volcano is such a reflection of myself.

Fire in me

I'm on fire

Fire is me

I'm the fire

I'm a fire

The fire is mine

The fire is me

Me and fire

Fire and me

FIRE

ME
